Belgium - Contribution of €2 million to the World Food Programme to promote the development of its blockchain project
The World Food Program (WFP) announced on April 19 that the Belgian government will contribute 2 million Euros to the World Food Programme to promote the World Food Programme (WFP) blockchain project.
According to reports, this donation will help the United Nations to use blockchain technology to solve food problems in the troubled areas. The “Building Blocks” project was piloted with other UN agencies and its purpose was to make WFP’s financial assistance to refugees more transparent. More than 100,000 Syrian refugees in refugee camps in Jordan benefited from the project and received food and other resources from donors.
The project was presented at the Theme Conference on “Utilizing Innovation to Foster Humanitarian Action” in New York. When talking about Belgium’s actions against this initiative, Alexander De Croo, deputy prime minister and development cooperation minister of Belgium, stated:
Innovation can save lives. This year, there will be more than 128 million people worldwide who need humanitarian assistance and protection. This is three times the number of people three years ago. Only by finding better ways to provide assistance can we narrow the gap between the demand and the aid actually given. Belgium appreciated the WFP's proposal and implementation of innovative solutions to save more lives and help more people in need.
The United Nations announced its plan in May last year, even with the use of the Taifang blockchain technology to distribute coupons in place of local currencies to ensure that refugees in Jordan can obtain food. WFP has tested this technology in Pakistan and more than 10,000 people have benefited from it.
